What are essential oils exactly?
Essential oils are pure plant extracts that are obtained by careful steam distillation or cold pressing. They are 50-70 times more powerful than herbs and are nature’s defense mechanism for plants and cells. They are highly concentrated so a little goes a very long way and they are a safe, effective, affordable, and an alternative to many synthetic products/remedies.The resulting oils have a distinctive molecular profile that gives them specific aromas and properties. They have been used for thousands of years for everything from cosmetic, dietary to spiritual and religious purposes by people all over the world.

To what purpose do we use the use the oils?
Lots of them! There are countless ways to use essential oils: in the kitchen or at the gym, diffusing them or applying them to the skin—the possibilities are endless. The most important thing to remember is that each oil is different. Always check individual labels to find out if an oil needs to be diluted before using it on the skin or ingesting it and how often it should be used. A great place to start is to experiment with your own custom essential oil blends to find the scents that speak to your soul. You can also use them in the kitchen, for cleaning, laundry, etc. There are many different DIY recipes on Pinterest.
We use them for everything from
- Replacing toxic household cleaning and personal care products
- Making safe toxin free perfume and deodorant
- Taking care of ourselves, kids, family and loved ones in countless ways
- Naturally flavoring food- we love making low-sugar citrus green smoothies or peppermint chocolate bliss balls.
- Calming my kids down, helping them focus and stay grounded in the day and go the f%&$ to sleep at night
- Supporting our immune system, respiratory system, digestive system, energy, nervous system, emotions, hormones and
What are the different ways to use essential oils?
DōTERRA’s bottle labels give directions on how to use them. Options are aromatically, internally, or topically (on the skin). We absolutely love putting them in our diffusers and enjoying them throughout the day in our house, at our jobs or even in our car!
How often can essential oils be applied? How much do I use?
Follow the proper usage instructions printed on each essential oil label. Essential oils are very powerful, so start low and go slow. Excessive use of essential oils may increase the risk for adverse reactions. In most cases, 1-2 drops are enough and using more is more often than not a waste of product. Depending on the essential oil, you can slowly build up to 3-4 uses per day if you’d like.
Which single oils are safe for internal use?
Toxicity is a term used to describe the point at which a substance causes harm or damage to the body. Even water, vitamins, and minerals— substances vital to life—can be toxic if consumed at a high enough dose. Likewise, all essential oils have a toxic dose, though it is always far above appropriate usage recommendations. Perhaps more important than considering the negative effects associated with excessive use, is considering the incredible benefits that can be reaped when essential oils are used appropriately and safely.
Some essential oils should not be used internally. Take Wintergreen, for example, an oil characterized by high amounts of the constituent methyl salicylate. It is not recommended for internal use. Instead, it is most beneficial used topically where it can be applied directly to specific areas for a targeted benefit. Although safe to take internally at low doses, it is simply most effective when used topically. An important part of using essential oils is regarding them on an individual basis, noting their specific chemistry,
Other oils we recommend to not use internally: Arborvitae, cedarwood, cypress, eucalyptus, white fir and wintergreen
Anything I need to know about the oils before I start using them on my skin?
Less is more. Always start with a small dose/ dilute with a carrier oil. Hot oils (like cassia, clove, cinnamon, lemongrass, oregano, thyme, deep blue) should always be used diluted because they cause a hot or warming sensation when applied to the skin.
Citrus oils are photosensitive oils which means they contain natural molecules that react with sunlight (UV light) and cause a sensitivity reaction. DōTERRA’s labels contain warnings to avoid sun/UV light for 12-48 hours after applying.
Last but not least, peppermint oil has a cooling sensation which can be too intense so use sparingly and always
We recommend you always use a patch test before using a new oil. To perform a patch test, apply 1-2 drops of essential oil to a patch of skin such as the forearm. Observe that area of skin over the course of 1-2 hours for any noticeable reaction. Reactions normally occur within 5-10 minutes. If you experience a hot or burning sensation or develop a rash, add fractionated coconut oil or any other carrier oil to the affected area as often as needed to wipe it off.
I see the term "carrier oil" used in several places. What is a carrier oil, what does it do, and why should I use it?
A carrier oil is a vegetable oil (such as coconut oil, olive oil, or grapeseed oil) that can be used to dilute essential oils. DōTERRA has an excellent carrier oil for all applications called fractionated coconut oil.
Carrier oils ensure that essential oils applied topically (on the skin) are comfortable. Dilution with a carrier oil does not dilute the effect of the essential oil but it does prevent waste due to an excessive application.
Vegetable shortening, butter, margarine, or petroleum derivatives (like petroleum jelly, baby oil, etc) should never be used as carrier oils.
Can essential oils be applied to sensitive areas?
Do not use essential oils are sensitive areas such as eyes, ears, genitals, and mucous membranes. If you choose to use the oil in any sensitive area, dilute 1 drop of the essential oil with 5-10 drops of a carrier oil.
What if I experience skin discomfort or irritation?
If discomfort or irritation occurs stop using the essential oil and apply fractionated coconut oil or another carrier oil to the affected area. Consider discontinuing these agents if a reaction occurs. Before using the essential oil again, perform a patch test (see above under “Anything I need to know about the oils before I start using them on my skin”) and dilute with a carrier oil as needed.
Be aware that some documents suggest diluting the oil with water, but water actually drives oil into the skin and eyes. Never use water in an attempt to flush the oil off of the skin, as this may increase discomfort. If a product does get in your eye, flush with a carrier oil as quickly as possible to alleviate any discomfort. If eye discomfort doesn’t go away within 5 minutes do seek medical attention.
Can I use them on my kids?
While it may seem like essential oils are just the latest and greatest thing, they’ve actually been used by humans for millennia. Do remember that oils are potent, and you only need a very small amount to achieve efficacy, especially when it comes to children. A little bit goes a very long way.
First things first, since essential oils are highly concentrated ingestion is not recommended for infants. With every new essential oil, dilute heavily and spot test on an arm or leg, and check for possible reactions. Avoid adding essential oils to baths. Your baby or young child may splash in or swallow the water increasing the risk that essential oils can be ingested or enter the eyes.
Kids’ skin is different from adult skin; it’s thinner and generally more sensitive. Even though most oils tend to be non-irritating on the skin (especially on the bottom of the feet, where the skin is thickest), it’s a great idea to dilute essential oil in a good carrier oil before applying to children. You’ll still get the same benefits of the essential oil—you’re just adding extra moisture and pampering delicate child skin. The doTERRA Touch products are great for this, by the way. They’re our favourites!
Aromatherapy is an excellent way to enjoy the benefits of essential oil without the worry of skin reactions. Inhaled oils have long been studied for their ability to enhance feelings of relaxation, encouragement, excitement, focus, and well-being. Additionally, diffused oils may support a healthier indoor environment. That’s always a bonus when you’ve got a houseful of kids. There is also a multitude of healthy non-toxic bathroom essentials and cleaning products by dōTERRA to support our growing children in a safe environment.
The labels on doTERRA’s oil bottles remind us to keep them out of reach of children. Kids won’t understand the potency of the essential oils—they only know that these lovely liquids smell divine, and may go overboard in using them. Adults, not children, should always be doing the oil applications, and judiciously at that.
Oils that can be challenging to a baby’s sensitive system are the following oils or blends that contain them: sage, clary sage, wintergreen, eucalyptus.
And what about during my pregnancy?
As with any medical condition, we strongly recommend that before using essential oils you seek the advice and recommendation of a competent, trained health care advisor who is experienced in essential oil usage. Some people choose to avoid the (excessive) use of Clary Sage, Sage, Fennel and Wintergreen, as well as the blends and supplements that contain these oils.
Here are some essential oils to consider using:
- Peppermint, ginger and cardamom are excellent oils to be used mostly during the first trimester to help aid digestion.
- Fractionated coconut oil with Immortelle to be used on your stomach during the second trimester to aid your skin and improve the appearance of fine lines.
- Citrus oils: lemon, lime an grapefruit to be used during the third trimester to help cleanse and support your digestive system.
- Wild orange and doTERRA Balance to be used in a diffuser during labour and delivery to establish a calm atmosphere.
- doTERRA Touch Kit is recommended because everyone is always asking how much to dilute the oils and what they can use with kids. The Touch Kit is the perfect answer to those questions. They’re already perfectly diluted and are in just the right amount. Keep in mind though, not all the oils are for new babies like Oregano.
What’s the difference in using a single oil and an oil blend?
Single oils are one ingredient only. Oil blends contain multiple ingredients.
I have a really hard time falling asleep at night. Which oils promote a good night sleep?
Grounding oils like vetiver, cedarwood and arborvitae are great single oils to ‘ get out of your head’. Lavender, clary sage and Roman chamomile are great oils to promote relaxation. Oil blends like the grounding blend and the restful blend are great as well
I have an upcoming flu. What is out there to help me?
Doterra’s On Guard protective blend is a great ‘ overall remedy’. The Breathe respiratory blend is great to clear the airways.
Any literature available on essential oils?
There are many different books about essential oils to dive into. Amazon and Oil life.com, for example, sell great titles. My essential oil bible is The Modern Essentials book and Emotions & Essential Oils. Another personal favourite isThe Essential Life Book and The Essential Yoga Program. Google is your friend but do be cautious with taking everybody’s advice. Follow common-sense and go for competent sources!
Do Essential Oils expire?
Yes, they do! This is because dōTERRA doesn’t use preservatives or synthetic fillers. Most essential oils are amazingly stable and can last many years without breaking down or changing in aroma or chemical composition. Each oil, however, has a different shelf life. Melaleuca (Tea Tree) and Lemon oils, for example, are quicker to oxidate than other essential oils. All of our oils are packed in dark glass bottles to protect them from sun exposure but you can help extend their life even longer by storing them away from heat and sun.
What if I have a medical condition or take prescription medication?
If you have a disease or medical condition or are using prescription medication, we always recommend you consult with a healthcare advisor who has experience with essential oils. Although we are believers in using essential oils as a complementary tool for a multitude of conditions, never go it alone and substitute essential oil for your medication. Always seek the advice of the prescribing physician and a pharmacist about potential interactions between any medication and essential oils.
