“What we fear of doing most is usually what we most need to do.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
What is a coach?
A professional life coach is someone who is trained to help you reach your fullest potential and happiest dreams. People hire a life coach because they want to get more out of their life than they are currently making possible by themselves. We all need an objective eye, a shoulder to lean on and unique tools to make positive changes. Life coaching typically starts out with helping you get clear on your life’s vision, identifying barriers and limiting beliefs and setting achievable goals. Assessing where you are currently will help you and your coach keep track of your progress and foresee obstacles. Your coach will make sure you don’t stray off your chosen path through different techniques that will help you make peace with the past, stay in the present while also looking forward to your future. And because these sessions are completely personal, at any time that you need a modification your coach will help you as well. The point is that you start feeling inspired, remain feeling empowered, feel safe and start going after your dreams.
Isn’t coaching just therapy?
One of the most common misconceptions about life coaching is that it is secretly therapy (possibly from an unlicensed practitioner). Despite occasional areas of overlap, the work and processes of therapists and life coaches are very different. Therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, is a long-term process in which clients work with a healthcare professional to diagnose and resolve problematic beliefs, behaviors, and sometimes physical responses. Life coaching is actually a whole other field of service. Life coaches do not diagnose illnesses and pathologies like therapists do but instead helps those that are committed to meet the outcomes that will bring them personal success and fulfillment.
If you aren’t sure whether you should work with a therapist or a coach the following perspective might help. Imagine yourself as a professional athlete looking to score more points in the game of your choice. If you are physically or emotionally unwell you wouldn’t hire a soccer coach to work on your technique, but a doctor to make sure you are well enough to take on the challenges ahead. If however, you are well enough to take on these challenges and you need perspective in past and present behavior to score better points in the future, you will hire a coach or other expert to help you do exactly that. I am a huge believer in trying different things and into finding the combination that works for each individual. However, don’t ever be fooled by anyone telling you they can do what doctors can. If you need counseling or medical help for whatever reason, please do so.
Do I need a life coach?
I realize the decision to take on a life coach is a major one. I have been where you are standing right now and have asked myself the same thing. What helped me determine whether it was right for me was the following thought patterns:
Am I stuck?
You’ve achieved a lot so far but seem to not move forward as much as you’d like or did in the past. Whatever life decisions you are facing a coach can offer you the unbiased guidance that friends and family aren’t always able to give. While our inner circle can listen to us and provide us with their opinions and advice, a coach can help you with what your inner voices are saying and determine what YOU want and need. Bonus: you won’t ever have to feel guilty or fear judgment.
Am I unclear or indecisive?
Most of us are so focused on things we “should” be doing according to ourselves, our friends and our family that it can really cloud your judgment. Since coaches offer an objective eye while getting to know you on a deeper level, they are perfect in guiding you towards understanding what does and doesn’t make you happy. Getting clear is necessary to live a fulfilled life and it’s a life coach’s job to help you figure out how to get to it.
Am I holding myself back?
We all have scars from our past. Some of us, however, have more trouble letting go of old beliefs that we picked up throughout our lives that are limiting. Holding on to terrible memories and feelings are both exhausting and destructive. As a life coach, it is my job to help you work through these limiting beliefs and transform them into beliefs that empower, instruct and help you move forward.
What am I focused on?
Maybe you have a dream, like starting a business or finding your dream partner, but you keep telling yourself ‘when I have more money, time, energy, AAH!’. Don’t let your amazing idea fall away because right now you lack the confidence, time, energy or money. Coaches will help you come up with action steps and help you target those limiting beliefs and get you to where you want to be, regardless of your goals and dreams. The time is now! You don’t have to be great to get started, but you do need to get started to be great.
What can I do for you as your coach?
A coach teaches, motivates and inspires to help you achieve what you only dreamed possible.
To make things short, the things I can help you with include:
– Identifying goals and your personal vision
– Creating plans of action and be your accountability partner
– Identifying your limiting beliefs
– Mentoring you towards a happier work/life balance
– Changing self-destructive habits
– Making amends with your past
– Starting a wellness business from scratch & working towards financial independence
– and more…
